Online-Merge-Offline Classroom and Its Particularities

The thesis focuses on online-merge-offline classroom practice in a sense of teaching both physically present and remotely connected pupils/students simultaneously using videoconferencing applications, which was implemented at many schools in Czechia to provide the continuity of education to those, who found themselves in quarantine or isolation due to the covid-19 pandemic. The goal of this study is to find out how was this hybrid teaching format put into practice by different teachers, describe its main benefits and challenges, and propose recommendations for its effective implementation. The empirical part of the thesis is a qualitative study employing the method of interview. The respondents were nine selected teachers who led lessons this way during the school year 2021/2022. From those interviews, several risks and challenges emerged, for instance the demanding nature of implementing the online-merge-offline classroom practice for the teaches, who needed to divide their attention between two heterogeneous groups, look for suitable new methods to include all the pupils and deal with the technical limitations of the digital technology available to them.
